Wellness retreats in New Jersey, on Lake Hopatcong

Halcyon Hilltop is a private retreat house on Lake Hopatcong, New Jersey's largest lake, in Mount Arlington, Morris County. Your group gathers in the retreat space for a day or a few nights, up to 15 guests, and builds the retreat from breathwork, sound healing, yoga, meditation and more, each led by an independent practitioner. It is about an hour from Manhattan.

What a retreat at Halcyon is

Most retreats in New Jersey are one of two things: a religious retreat house with a fixed program, or a spa resort where your weekend is shared with every other guest. Halcyon is neither. It is a retreat space on the water where one group at a time comes together on purpose, around experiences led by professionals.

You choose the shape of it. Some groups come for a single day of breathwork and a long lunch by the lake. Others stay two or three nights and fill the days with yoga at sunrise, a sound bath in the evening and nothing at all in between. A birthday, a bridal weekend, a women's circle, a couples reset, a team offsite or a few quiet days on your own: the house is arranged around the people in it, not around a timetable.

Every experience is led by an independent practitioner who does that work professionally. You choose the experience; we connect it with the right person for it.

What you can do here

The experiences on offer at the house right now:

  • Breathwork: guided breathing sessions, from gentle to deeply energising.
  • Sound healing: sound baths with bowls and other instruments, lying down, eyes closed.
  • Yoga: classes matched to the group, from first-timers to daily practitioners.
  • Meditation: guided stillness on the dock or in the quiet room.
  • Somatic movement: body-led practices for releasing tension and stress.
  • Intuitive reading: one-to-one sessions for guests who want them.
  • Private chef: meals cooked at the house, so nobody has to leave the water.

See every experience, with the practitioners who lead them, on the experiences page.

Some guests come for clinical work. Halcyon does not provide medical or clinical services, but our partner Presence of Mind Therapy, founded by Maureen Lennon-Schafer, LCSW, provides ketamine-assisted psychotherapy in New Jersey through licensed clinicians, and leads licensed psilocybin retreats in Colorado, where the state's regulated program allows it. Psilocybin is not offered in New Jersey or at the house.

Day retreats and overnight stays

A day retreat is a complete visit, not a shortened stay. You arrive in the morning, spend the day in the retreat space beside the lake, and leave in the evening. It suits a birthday, a team day or a first visit, and it is the easiest way to see whether the place is for you.

An overnight retreat includes the days on either side, so a two-night stay gives you three days at the house. Nights are when the lake goes quiet, and a second morning gives the retreat room to settle.

Current day and night rates are on the booking page. The house rate covers the retreat space for your whole party; private rooms and experiences are added as you build the retreat.

Group sizes and rooms

The house hosts up to 15 guests. We recommend twelve: enough for a real group, few enough that nobody is lost in it. Smaller parties are welcome too, including couples and solo guests.

  • The Retreat Space: the lakeside heart of the house, included with every retreat.
  • The Blue View: a private suite with a teak floor and a balcony with chairs over the lake.
  • The Cozy Twin: an additional room with bunk beds, sleeping two.

The communal side of Halcyon is the point: people come together here on purpose, and private rooms are there for anyone who wants one.

The setting: Lake Hopatcong

Lake Hopatcong is the largest freshwater lake in New Jersey, about four square miles of water in the northern highlands, on the line between Morris and Sussex counties. The house sits above the shore in Mount Arlington, with the lake in view and a dock on the water.

It is a Northeast lake, not a beach resort: still water in the early morning, woods on the far shore, four real seasons. Summer is for long evenings outside. Autumn brings colour and cool, clear days. Winter is the quietest time of year, when a retreat feels most like a retreat.

Getting here from New York City and around New Jersey

  • From Midtown Manhattan: about 46 miles, roughly an hour and five minutes by car without traffic, mostly on Interstate 80.
  • From Morristown: about 17 miles, around half an hour.
  • From Newark Liberty Airport: about 41 miles, just under an hour.
  • By train: NJ Transit's Mount Arlington station, next to I-80 exit 30, is about four miles from the house. Montclair-Boonton and Morristown Line trains run there from New York Penn Station and Hoboken.

Driving times are measured without traffic; allow more on a Friday afternoon. We share exact directions and parking details when your retreat is confirmed.

Who leads your retreat

Halcyon works with a network of independent practitioners: breathwork facilitators, sound healers, yoga teachers, bodyworkers and licensed clinicians. Each runs their own practice and brings it to the house for your retreat.

Meet them on the practitioners page, starting with Maureen Lennon-Schafer, LCSW, founder of Presence of Mind Therapy, who is licensed in New Jersey and Colorado.

Questions people ask

Are New Jersey retreats suitable for beginners?

Yes. At Halcyon no experience is needed. Every session is led by a practitioner who does that work professionally and adjusts it to the people in the room, so a first-time meditator and a daily yoga practitioner can share the same retreat. If you are unsure where to start, a day retreat with breathwork or a sound bath is a gentle first step.

How large are the groups at New Jersey wellness retreats?

It depends on the venue. Many retreat centers mix several groups at once. Halcyon hosts one party at a time, of up to 15 guests, and recommends twelve. Couples and solo guests are welcome too.

What settings do New Jersey wellness retreats use?

New Jersey retreats range from shore towns and spa resorts to religious retreat houses and wooded hill country. Halcyon is a private lakeside house on Lake Hopatcong, the state's largest lake, in Morris County's northern highlands, with the water in view and a dock on the shore.

How far is Halcyon from New York City?

About 46 miles from Midtown Manhattan, roughly an hour and five minutes by car without traffic. NJ Transit trains from New York Penn Station and Hoboken stop at Mount Arlington station, about four miles from the house.

Can we come for just a day?

Yes. A day retreat gives your group the retreat space by the lake from morning to evening, with whichever experiences you choose. Current day rates are on the booking page.

Is Halcyon a medical or treatment center?

No. Halcyon is a retreat house. Wellness experiences are led by independent practitioners. Clinical services, such as ketamine-assisted psychotherapy, are provided by licensed clinicians of our partner Presence of Mind Therapy, under their own licenses.
