Day retreats near NYC: a lakeside day in New Jersey
A day retreat near NYC can be a private lakeside day in New Jersey. Halcyon Hilltop is a retreat house on Lake Hopatcong in Mount Arlington, about 40 miles from Manhattan. Your group has the retreat space from morning through evening, with practices such as yoga, breathwork and a sound bath led by independent practitioners.

What a day retreat is
A day retreat is a retreat without the overnight. You arrive in the morning, step out of your ordinary routine for the day, and go home the same evening. It suits people who cannot take a weekend away, groups who want to try a retreat before committing to a longer one, and anyone who wants the quiet without packing a bag.
At Halcyon a day retreat stands on its own. It is not a shortened version of a weekend. You have the retreat space, the practitioners you chose, and the water, from morning through evening.
How far is it from New York City?
Lake Hopatcong is about 40 miles from Manhattan, in the northern New Jersey highlands on the line between Morris and Sussex counties. The house is in Mount Arlington, on the southeast shore of the lake, and most of the drive from the city is Interstate 80, which runs through the borough.
Plan for traffic. Outside rush hour the drive is a manageable morning trip from Manhattan, and at peak times it takes noticeably longer, so many groups set a mid-morning start.
Mount Arlington also has an NJ Transit station at the Interstate 80 interchange, served on weekdays by the Montclair-Boonton and Morristown lines toward Hoboken. Service at this station is limited, so check NJ Transit's current timetable before you plan a group around it.
A sample day
Every day here is composed by the group, so there is no fixed schedule. A common shape looks like this:
- Morning: arrive, settle in, and start with something gentle: a guided meditation or a small-group yoga session.
- Late morning: breathwork, with the practitioner telling you in advance how intense the session will be.
- Midday: lunch and unstructured time by the water.
- Afternoon: a massage or an esthetician's treatment for whoever wants one, or a walk.
- Late afternoon: a sound bath to close the day, lying down, with mats, bolsters and blankets.
Two or three practices is usually plenty. A day with space between sessions tends to feel like a retreat; a day packed back to back tends to feel like a conference.
What you can book
The practices on offer are listed on Experiences, and the people who lead them are on Practitioners. They include breathwork, sound baths, meditation, yoga, massage, somatic movement and energy work, along with a private chef and spa treatments by an esthetician. What is offered changes with the season and the practitioners' availability, so the Experiences page is the current list.
Each practitioner is an independent professional. You choose the sessions, and the house arranges the day around them.
Who a day retreat suits
Day retreats work well for a team that wants an offsite without hotel nights, for a birthday or milestone with friends, for a women's circle, and for a group that has never done a retreat and wants a first taste. The house welcomes groups of up to 15 guests.
If one day turns out not to be enough, the same group can come back for an overnight. Staying the night adds the evening and early morning at the lake, a chef-prepared dinner, breakfast and lunch, and, if you want them, two private rooms: The Cozy Twin and The Blue View. Stays run up to three nights.
Day retreat or spa day: what is the difference?
A spa day is usually a menu of treatments in a shared facility. You book a slot, you move between rooms, and other guests are there with you. A day retreat is closer to a private day out of time: one group, one space, a rhythm of practices and rest, and meals together.
Treatments can still be part of a retreat day. An esthetician offers manicure, pedicure, facial and scalp treatments as individual spa services, booked like any other session. The difference is that they sit inside a day your group has shaped, rather than being the whole of it.
If your group mostly wants treatments, say so when you inquire, and the day can be built around them.
Day retreat cost, and how to book
The day rate for the retreat space and the price of each practice are shown as you build your retreat, because rates are set by season and day of the week. See current rates in the retreat builder.
Retreats are arranged by inquiry, not booked instantly. You choose a date and the practices, send the request, and the house confirms in writing. Your date is held only once that confirmation arrives. For an overview of retreats at the house, see wellness retreats in New Jersey.
