Lake Hopatcong in the off-season: a retreat guide

Lake Hopatcong in the off-season is quieter than in summer. After Labor Day the boat traffic thins, autumn color comes to the ridges, and in a cold winter the lake can freeze for ice fishing. It is a good season for a retreat: fewer crowds, long evenings indoors, and the water still in view.

Lake Hopatcong at a glance

Lake Hopatcong is the largest freshwater body in New Jersey, about 4 square miles in area, in the northern highlands on the line between Morris and Sussex counties. Four municipalities surround it: Mount Arlington, Hopatcong, Jefferson Township and Roxbury Township. It sits about 40 miles from Manhattan.

The lake has a long history. It was the main water supply for the Morris Canal, which linked the Delaware River to New York Harbor. After passenger rail arrived in 1882 it became a popular summer resort, and in winter it was one of the principal sources of natural ice for the eastern United States, with more than a thousand men working the harvest. The ice trade ended around 1930.

Lake Hopatcong in the fall

Fall is when the lake shifts from summer resort to residential lake. Swimming at Hopatcong State Park runs from Memorial Day through Labor Day, and after that the beaches empty and the shoreline gets quiet.

Some years the state lowers the lake in the fall. Its water-level plan allows a drawdown starting the day after Labor Day, so the dam can be inspected and shoreline structures repaired. In a drawdown year the shoreline looks different, with more exposed rock and mudflat, so check before you plan anything that depends on the water.

For a retreat, autumn is often the best season of the year: cool mornings for yoga and meditation, clear afternoons for a walk, and early dusk that pulls everyone toward a long dinner.

Lake Hopatcong in winter

When the cold holds, the lake freezes, and winter brings its own activity. The Lake Hopatcong Foundation describes the lake as one of the finest in the state for ice fishing, mainly for chain pickerel and yellow perch, and the Knee-Deep Club holds annual ice fishing contests, conditions permitting. Hockey and ice boats appear on the ice too.

At Hopatcong State Park, ice fishing is allowed only on at least 4 inches of ice, and fishing follows New Jersey Division of Fish and Wildlife rules. Ice conditions change from day to day and from cove to cove. Do not go onto the ice unless you know local conditions.

If you would rather look at the ice than stand on it, a winter retreat keeps the lake in view from indoors: a sound bath or meditation in the retreat space, then a private chef dinner.

Things to do around the lake out of season

  • Hopatcong State Park, in the Landing section of Roxbury, is open year-round for fishing, and it is where the Musconetcong River leaves the lake.
  • The Lake Hopatcong Historical Museum occupies the old lock tender's house on the Morris Canal feeder, inside the state park. It opens for scheduled public hours rather than daily, so check its calendar before you go.
  • A walk along the shore and the ridge, which a guided hike can make easier to plan for a group.

Summer favorites such as boat rentals, lake cruises and some waterfront restaurants run reduced hours or close for the season, so call ahead.

What to pack for a fall or winter retreat

Mornings by the lake are colder than in the city, even in early fall. Bring warm layers, a hat for walks, comfortable clothes for yoga and movement sessions, and waterproof shoes for the shoreline. For practices done lying down, such as a sound bath, the house provides mats, bolsters and blankets, because bodies cool quickly once they stop moving.

Planning an off-season retreat at Halcyon

Halcyon Hilltop is a private retreat house on the southeast shore of the lake in Mount Arlington. A group of up to 15 guests can come for a day retreat or stay up to three nights. The practices, all led by independent practitioners, are on Experiences: yoga, breathwork, sound baths, meditation, massage and more.

Off-season days are shorter, so plan the outdoor parts of the day for late morning and early afternoon and keep the evening for slower practices indoors. Rates for the retreat space and each session are set by season and day of the week; see current rates in the retreat builder. For more on the house, see wellness retreats in New Jersey.
