Wellness retreats near NYC: the New Jersey option
Most lists of retreats near New York point you up the Thruway. The New Jersey Highlands are closer: a lake, woods and a quiet house about an hour from Manhattan.

The closest wellness retreats to New York City are not all upstate. Lake Hopatcong in the New Jersey Highlands is about an hour's drive from Manhattan, roughly 45 miles, and close enough for a day retreat. Halcyon's private retreat house there takes groups of up to 15 for a day or up to three nights.
Search for wellness retreats near NYC and almost every result is in the Hudson Valley, the Catskills or the Berkshires. Those are wonderful places, and we say more about them below. But for a lot of people the deciding factor is simple: how much of a short weekend do you want to spend in the car?
Why look west instead of north
Northwest New Jersey is the part of the state most New Yorkers never see. The Highlands are a band of forested ridges and lakes running through Morris, Sussex and neighboring counties, and Lake Hopatcong sits among them: about 2,500 acres of water, the largest lake in New Jersey, folded into wooded hills.
From Midtown, the drive is mostly Interstate 80 west, about an hour in light traffic. On a Friday evening it will be longer, as every route out of the city is, but it is a short enough trip that you can leave after lunch and still have the afternoon at the water.
Can you get there without a car?
Yes, with planning. Mount Arlington has a New Jersey Transit station with service toward Hoboken and New York Penn Station. Trains are infrequent, especially at weekends, so check the NJ Transit timetable before you build a plan around them, and arrange the last few miles from the station before you travel.
A day retreat near NYC
A day is enough to feel the difference. At Halcyon you can come for the day: the retreat space from morning to evening, with sessions chosen from our experiences.
A day might look like this. Arrive mid-morning and walk down to the water. A breathwork session before lunch. A long, unhurried meal from a private chef. An afternoon of nothing, or a walk in the woods. A sound bath as the light goes, then home in time for bed. Every part of it is optional.
Day retreats suit people who cannot be away overnight, groups who want a team day out of the office without a hotel, and anyone who wants to try a retreat before committing a whole weekend to one.
A weekend retreat near NYC
Overnight is where a retreat starts to work properly. The first evening is for arriving. The second day, with no travel at either end of it, is the one people remember.
A weekend at the house might go: Friday afternoon arrival and a fire on the patio. Saturday, yoga or meditation in the morning, a walk at midday, a sound bath before dinner. Sunday, a late breakfast and nothing else until you leave. We wrote more about planning one in a weekend retreat with friends.
Who it suits
Friends. A birthday, a reunion or a long-promised weekend away, with the house to yourselves.
Women's retreats. Circles, coaching groups and friends who want a weekend of practice and conversation in a private setting.
Teams. A corporate retreat near NYC that is not a conference hotel: a quiet room for the hard conversations, a table to eat at together, and the lake when everyone needs a break.
Practitioners. Coaches, teachers and therapists who want a calm place to bring their own clients.
The house welcomes up to 15 guests. Every retreat is requested first and confirmed by the house, so it is shaped around the group rather than a fixed timetable.
When is the best time to go?
Every season works, for different reasons. Autumn is the favorite: across New Jersey, peak fall color arrives on average between October 19 and 29, and it reaches the Highlands first. Summer is the lake at its liveliest, with boats on the water and long evenings on the patio. Winter is the quietest. The lake is lowered on purpose each year so that ice does not damage the shoreline, and nearby Mahlon Dickerson Reservation is used for snowshoeing and cross-country skiing. Spring is the season of mud and birdsong, and of the emptiest trails.
If you only have one weekend, choose the second half of October, and keep an open mind about the leaves. We wrote about that season in the lake after the boats leave.
How to plan it
- Agree the shape first. A day or a night, how many people, and whether the point is rest, practice or time together.
- Choose a few experiences, not many. Two sessions a day is plenty; the empty hours are part of the retreat.
- Tell us about the group. Dietary needs, mobility, anything a practitioner should know.
- Plan the journey home. Leave Sunday afternoon rather than evening and you will keep more of the weekend.
When you compose a retreat you choose dates, the group and the experiences, and send it as a request. Dates are held once the house confirms.
The upstate options, fairly
If a longer trip suits you, the classic retreats near New York are worth knowing. The Ranch Hudson Valley in Sloatsburg, New York, about an hour from the city, runs structured, active wellness programs. Mohonk Mountain House near New Paltz is a historic resort with a large spa. Menla in Phoenicia, in the Catskills, is a resort and destination spa with programmed retreats.
The difference is mostly one of shape. Those places run their own programs and you join them, often alongside strangers. A retreat space like ours hosts one group at a time, and you decide what the days hold. Neither is better. Ask yourself whether you want to be looked after inside someone else's schedule, or to make your own.
What it costs
Upstate resorts usually price per person, with programs or treatments added. A retreat space like ours is priced for the group, so the cost per person falls as more people come. Our current rates appear as you choose dates, and curated retreats list everything included up front.
