A weekend retreat with friends, an hour from New York

Planning a group wellness weekend at Lake Hopatcong: how far it is, how to get here, what to book and how booking works.

More people are taking shorter trips, closer to home, more often. In Hilton's newest survey of about 15,000 travelers, a quarter said they now take shorter, more frequent trips to fit around work, and 79 percent said fresh air and the outdoors are essential to relaxing. Most wellness travel is already local: the Global Wellness Institute counts 88 percent of wellness trips as domestic.

A weekend with friends is the natural shape for that. Long enough to arrive properly, short enough to say yes to. Below are the questions people ask us most when they plan one.

Questions

How far is Lake Hopatcong from New York City?

About an hour by car in light traffic. The house is at 147 McGregor Ave in Mount Arlington, New Jersey, roughly 45 miles from Midtown Manhattan.

Can we get there without a car?

Mount Arlington has a New Jersey Transit station with service toward Hoboken and New York Penn Station. Trains are infrequent, especially at weekends, so check the NJ Transit timetable before you plan around them.

What can a group do there?

Guests compose a retreat from experiences led by independent practitioners: breathwork, sound baths, meditation, yoga, massage and spa services, guided hikes, somatic movement and dance, and a private chef for the table. Choose as many or as few as you like.

When is the best time to go?

Each season is different. Autumn brings color, usually peaking in the second half of October. Summer is the lake at its liveliest. Winter is the quietest, and nearby Mahlon Dickerson Reservation is used for snowshoeing and cross-country skiing.

How does booking work?

Retreats at Halcyon are arranged by inquiry, not booked instantly. Tell us your dates, your group and what you would like, and dates are held only once the house confirms in writing.

Do you offer medical or clinical services?

No. Halcyon does not provide medical services and does not diagnose or treat any condition. Some clinical therapies are available separately through our licensed partner, Presence of Mind Therapy.
